What is Adolescent ?

Adolescence Health

Adolescence is the transitional phase between childhood and adulthood, characterized by rapid physical, cognitive, and emotional development that typically occurs between the ages of 10 and 19. During this period, individuals go through puberty and develop into adults, experiencing significant changes in their bodies, thinking processes, and social roles.

Key characteristics of adolescence

Physical development: Adolescence begins with puberty and includes significant physical changes like growth spurts, the development of sex organs, and changes in body composition and muscle mass.

Cognitive development: Individuals develop more abstract and logical thinking, improving their knowledge and reasoning skills.

Psychosocial development: This period is crucial for forming identity and preparing for adult social roles, though it can involve emotional and social challenges.

Health: Adolescence is a critical time for establishing health behaviors related to diet, physical activity, and substance use that can impact future health.

Age range: The World Health Organization (WHO) (https://www.who.int/southeastasia/health-topics/adolescent-health) defines adolescents as individuals aged 10 to 19 years old.

The role of adolescence

Adolescence is a vital period for development, and it's important for adolescents to have access to information, skills, and support to help them grow and develop healthily. This includes age-appropriate education, health services that meet their needs, and safe, supportive environments.
